John Barrett, M.D., founder and director of The Florida Knee and Orthopedic Centers, has been an innovator in orthopedic surgical techniques and a pioneer in developing systems for high quality, cost-effective orthopedic care.
Dr. Barrett trained in orthopedics at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He received his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical School and interned in general surgery at George Washington University Hospital.
Board-certified in Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Barrett began to specialize in knee surgery during the latter half of the 1970s, correctly foreseeing that with proliferating technology the very highest skill levels would be achieved through super-specialization. He was among the first orthopedic surgeons in the United States to use an arthroscope, a technology now used in 90% of all knee surgery in the country. He opened his Center in 1983 specializing exclusively in knee problems until 1991.
Other standard-setting arthroscopic firsts for Dr. Barrett and his associates at The Florida Knee and Orthopedic Centers include the first arthroscopy in Florida, the first arthroscopic ligament transplant in Florida and the first arthroscopic cartilage transplant in Florida. The Center is the most experienced meniscus cartilage Transplant Center in the world.
